Our Heritage

A Century of Making Home Feel Like Home

For more than a century, Broyhill has been part of the American home, bringing timeless style, everyday comfort, and thoughtfully designed furniture to generations of families.

From our early roots in Lenoir, North Carolina, to becoming one of America's most recognized furniture brands, the Broyhill story is one of determination, fresh ideas, and a belief that beautiful, comfortable spaces should feel within reach.

Through changing times and evolving styles, one thing has remained at the heart of Broyhill:
Everyone deserves to feel at home.

1905 | Where Our Story Begins

Rooted in North Carolina

The story of Broyhill begins in Lenoir, North Carolina, a community with a rich furniture-making heritage. Early furniture factories established the foundation for an industry that would help shape the region for generations.

With access to skilled craftspeople and a growing tradition of furniture manufacturing, Lenoir became the place where the Broyhill name would take root and eventually grow into a nationally recognized brand.

1926 | A New Beginning

The Entrepreneurial Spirit of J.E. Broyhill

When a fire destroyed a key furniture supplier, James Edgar "J.E." Broyhill saw an opportunity to build something of his own.

With a $5,000 loan secured against his home, he founded the Lenoir Chair Company in North Carolina. What began as a determined response to an unexpected challenge would become the foundation of Broyhill Furniture Industries.

That entrepreneurial spirit helped establish a brand built around practical furniture, approachable style, and the needs of American families.

1930s–1940s | Growing Through Changing Times

Building a Stronger Foundation

Even during the challenges of the Great Depression, Broyhill continued to move forward. J.E. Broyhill acquired five struggling furniture factories, expanding manufacturing capabilities and creating opportunities for growth.

As the company developed, so did its ability to offer a broader selection of wood and upholstered furniture for the home.

These formative decades helped establish Broyhill as a growing presence in American furniture manufacturing, with a focus on making comfortable, stylish furnishings accessible to more households.

1957 | A Fresh Perspective on Furniture

The Introduction of Broyhill Premier

As American homes and lifestyles evolved, so did Broyhill.

The introduction of the Broyhill Premier line in 1957 marked an exciting new chapter in the brand's design history. Collections such as Sculptra introduced distinctive silhouettes, sculptural details, and fresh approaches to furniture styling.

These designs brought new personality to living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms while reflecting Broyhill's ability to balance classic appeal with changing tastes.

Today, these early collections remain an important part of Broyhill's design heritage.

1962 | The Iconic Brasilia Collection

Inspired by Architecture. Designed for Home.

In 1962, Broyhill introduced one of its most memorable furniture collections: Brasilia.

Inspired by the distinctive architecture of Brasília, Brazil, particularly the work of architect Oscar Niemeyer, the collection featured sweeping curves, sculptural shapes, and architectural details.

Debuting at the Seattle World's Fair, Brasilia captured the imagination of furniture shoppers with a look that felt fresh, expressive, and unmistakably different.

Decades later, the collection remains a celebrated part of Broyhill's history, admired by vintage furniture collectors and design enthusiasts.
